Media Theory
The media theory that me and my partner are considering integrating into our project is the Reception Theory (Stuart Hall). Out of all the media theories we researched, we thought this one would be the best fit for our project.
The theory focuses on how different audiences interpret the same media in different ways. Basically that there is no "right way" to view it. The viewers all create different meanings based on things they have experienced or their emotions. We think this fits our idea well because our film opening doesn't use any dialogue, the chef is a faceless character, and a lot of details are left unexplained. Meaning that the viewers have to figure out what is going on using their mind.
For example, some viewers might think it's about:
• Addiction
• Guilt or trauma
• Denial and grief
• Manipulation
• Self-destruction
This shows that everyone could see the film opening in different aspects which I think is really cool.
An example of a film that uses the Reception Theory is The Great Gatsby, 2013.
